Bengaluru – The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has approved the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for a new flyover at Hebbal Junction. This initiative aims to ease traffic congestion for vehicles moving from the Nagawara side toward Kempegowda International Airport.
Why the New Flyover?
Traffic from Nagawara, Tumakuru Road, Mehkri Circle, BEL Circle, and the airport currently merges under the existing Hebbal flyover, causing severe bottlenecks. The proposed flyover will streamline airport-bound traffic by creating a dedicated route from the Nagawara side directly to the national highway, significantly reducing travel delays.
Smart Reuse Planned
BDA is evaluating the possibility of reusing 11 massive pillars constructed in 2019 for a previously planned but halted flyover. That project was stopped after the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) raised objections, citing interference with proposed Metro routes. These unused structures, built at a cost of ₹25 crore, are now being assessed for integration into the new plan.
Design and Scale
The proposed flyover is expected to span approximately one kilometre and will link Nagawara directly to the national highway heading toward the airport. The alignment will coincide with the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) ongoing road-widening efforts near Hebbal Lake, where sufficient space exists for a down ramp.

Evolution Over Time
This proposal is the latest in a series of infrastructure improvements around Hebbal Junction:
- A long-delayed 700-metre ramp with 26 pillars and 99 girders is now expected to open in August 2025.
- In May, the BDA received clearance to launch a 33.5-metre girder over a railway track, enabling a four-lane ramp over the Yeshwantpur–Omalur railway line.
- Separately, the Karnataka cabinet has approved a ₹17,780 crore underground tunnel road from Hebbal to Central Silk Board.
Traffic Impact and Outlook
If implemented, the new flyover will significantly reduce congestion for vehicles from Nagawara heading to the airport and other northern destinations. It will also help distribute traffic more evenly around BEL Circle and Mehkri Circle by providing a dedicated passage for airport-bound vehicles.
The DPR will determine the feasibility of reusing existing pillars, finalize the alignment, estimate costs, and set a construction timeline. With Hebbal Junction being a critical traffic node in North Bengaluru, this flyover could become a key solution in the city’s efforts to improve connectivity and ease traffic movement.
