BENGALURU: In a significant leap for Bengaluru’s urban transit infrastructure, BEML Limited has successfully conducted the test run of its first driverless metro trainset at its Bengaluru rail complex. The rollout marks a critical milestone in the execution of the Rs 3,177-crore contract to supply rolling stock for the Namma Metro’s upcoming Pink and Blue (Airport) Lines.
The event was witnessed by Dr. J Ravishankar, Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), and Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Ltd, alongside senior officials from both organizations.
Prototype to Undergo Rigorous Testing
According to officials, the prototype trainset is scheduled to be dispatched to the Kothanur depot after December 15. Once delivered, it will undergo a comprehensive testing and commissioning program lasting at least five months before it is deemed ready for deployment.
“The trainset will undergo a detailed programme of testing and commissioning in line with BMRCL’s timeline,” a BEML spokesperson stated. The company has also committed to providing comprehensive maintenance support for the rolling stock for up to 15 years.

“This rollout marks a major step in executing the contract awarded to BEML. The prototype reflects our growing contribution to India’s metro ecosystem, especially in driverless urban transit systems,” said Shantanu Roy, CMD, BEML.
Operational Timeline and Future Phases
The new trainsets are vital for meeting the deadline for Bengaluru’s Phase 2 expansion. The operational timeline provided by officials is as follows:
-
June 2026: The 7.5-km elevated section from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere is expected to open with five driverless trains.
-
December 2026: The 13.7-km underground stretch between Dairy Circle and Nagawara is slated for completion.
Once fully operational, the corridor will utilize 23 trainsets running from 5 am to midnight. Commuters can expect a frequency of 4.5 minutes during peak hours and eight minutes during non-peak periods.
Strengthening the Partnership
BEML remains the largest rolling stock supplier to Bengaluru Metro, having previously supplied trains for the operational Green and Purple lines. Recent additional orders have bolstered this partnership:
-
Rs 414 Crore: For six driverless trainsets for the Phase 2 Yellow Line.
-
Rs 405 Crore: For 42 additional cars for the Pink Line (awarded in March 2025).
This brings BEML’s total supply commitment to 66 trainsets (396 cars).
“The rollout confirms BEML’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art trainsets that will enhance commuting on the Pink Line and ORR Airport Line,” said Dr. J Ravishankar, MD, BMRCL.
