The Bengaluru Airport Metro Line is expected to become operational by the end of 2027, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The announcement marks an important milestone in Bengaluru’s expanding public transport network and its efforts to provide a direct, high-capacity rail connection to Kempegowda International Airport.
The airport metro corridor forms part of Bengaluru’s larger metro expansion programme aimed at improving regional connectivity, reducing dependence on road transport, and supporting the city’s long-term urban growth. Once operational, the line will provide a faster and more reliable travel option for air passengers, airport employees, and logistics operators who currently rely largely on congested road corridors.
Construction work is progressing across various stretches of the route, which includes elevated and underground sections, new stations, and system installations. The corridor is designed to integrate with the existing metro network, allowing seamless transfers from multiple parts of the city. Improved access to the airport is also expected to influence surrounding growth corridors, particularly in North Bangalore, which has seen steady infrastructure-led development in recent years.
The airport metro project is part of BMRCL’s broader strategy to connect key transport hubs, business districts, and residential zones through high-capacity rail infrastructure. By offering a dependable alternative to road travel, the metro is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and travel time for airport-bound commuters.
Infrastructure projects of this scale often play a significant role in shaping long-term urban and real estate patterns. Areas around major transit corridors typically witness improved accessibility, which supports residential and commercial development. This trend has already been observed along key northern corridors such as IVC Road, Devanahalli, which lies close to the airport and continues to attract development interest due to improved connectivity.
While BMRCL has not yet announced a detailed trial run schedule, the end-2027 timeline reflects the current target for completing civil works, track laying, signalling systems, and safety certifications.
Once operational, the Bengaluru Airport Metro Line is expected to become a vital component of the city’s transport ecosystem, strengthening airport access and supporting Bengaluru’s long-term mobility and economic growth.
