Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of Kempegowda International Airport, has applied for Environmental Clearance (EC) to undertake a major expansion of its operational infrastructure. The proposal aims to increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 55 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 114 MPPA, while also expanding cargo handling capacity from 1.0 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 1.4 MTPA. This move reflects Bengaluru’s growing importance as a global business, technology, and logistics hub.
Kempegowda International Airport has witnessed steady growth in passenger footfall and air cargo movement, driven by strong domestic and international connectivity. The proposed expansion will involve additional terminal facilities, enhanced runway and apron infrastructure, and modernized cargo handling systems to support future demand. Improved airport capacity is expected to ease congestion and significantly enhance passenger experience.
The EC application will be reviewed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) through its Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC). The evaluation process will examine environmental factors such as air and noise pollution, water consumption, waste management, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices. BIAL is expected to integrate green building standards and eco-friendly airport operations as part of the development plan.
The expansion is also likely to boost real estate activity in North Bangalore, particularly in emerging micro-markets close to the airport. Areas such as Devanahalli have already seen heightened interest due to improved connectivity and infrastructure development. According to real estate insights and updates on BookNewProperty, airport-led infrastructure growth often accelerates demand for residential and commercial projects.
With improved air connectivity acting as a catalyst, the expansion is expected to positively influence new residential projects in North Bangalore and drive long-term urban development around Devanahalli. Once approved, the project will strengthen Bengaluru’s position as a leading aviation and logistics gateway while contributing to regional economic growth and employment generation.
