The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started e‑auction proceedings against six high-value properties after owners failed to pay property tax dues totaling ₹455.48 crore. This step is part of a focused effort to recover long-pending taxes and strengthen municipal revenue.
Repeated reminders and notices did not lead to payment. As a result, the BMC will auction six properties across key city wards, including Goregaon (West), Bandra (West), Dahisar, Parel, Mazgaon, and Malad‑Kurar Village.
Under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the civic body can attach and auction assets to recover unpaid taxes. First, movable assets on the premises will be sold. If dues remain unsettled, the properties themselves will go under auction, following legal guidelines and interim orders from the Bombay High Court.
Besides these six, the BMC has issued 21‑day final notices to two more defaulters in South Mumbai’s Fort area. One is a residential-cum-hospital property with arrears of ₹21.03 crore, and the other is a commercial building with ₹13.47 crore in unpaid taxes. Failure to clear dues within the deadline will trigger auction proceedings.
This action is part of a larger BMC tax recovery drive targeting various property types, including residential, commercial, industrial, and hospitality spaces. The initiative aims to improve tax compliance and meet the BMC’s property tax collection goals for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
