The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Mumbai has announced an ambitious plan to digitally map all slum structures across the city by December 2025. The initiative aims to bring greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability to the slum redevelopment process and improve service delivery for residents.
According to SRA CEO Mahendra Kalyankar, the authority has already begun implementing a comprehensive digital transformation. The project will feature a multilingual web portal—available in 25 languages and certified by the Standardisation, Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) department—ensuring accessibility for all stakeholders. It will also include role-based online modules for officers, architects, developers, and the general public, promoting seamless interaction and faster approvals.
The digital system will use blockchain technology for approval workflows and automated data integration to connect Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, and electricity bill details. This will significantly reduce the verification time for slum dwellers, cutting the current annexure-2 generation period from six to nine months to near-instant processing. The platform is designed to minimize human intervention, prevent duplication of records, and make the entire process tamper-proof.
In addition to mapping existing structures, the SRA has set up a dedicated encroachment-tracking cell that uses satellite imagery to identify unauthorized constructions and monitor land-use changes over time. This data-driven approach allows for early detection of encroachments and prompt action by relevant authorities.
Real estate industry associations such as CREDAI-MCHI and NAREDCO have welcomed the move, stating that digitisation will streamline slum redevelopment approvals and restore developer confidence in the sector. They believe that transparent and efficient systems will encourage more developers to participate in rehabilitation projects, benefiting both residents and the city’s housing landscape.
Once fully implemented, the SRA’s digital mapping initiative is expected to revolutionize Mumbai’s slum rehabilitation framework. By integrating technology, automation, and real-time monitoring, the authority aims to ensure fair, transparent, and efficient redevelopment—marking a new era in urban transformation for Mumbai.
