After nearly four years of closures and diversions, Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road is finally set to reopen for two-way traffic, bringing huge relief to thousands of daily commuters. The long wait was caused by the construction of Namma Metro’s Pink Line, which led to major traffic jams, detours, and business disruptions along one of the city’s busiest stretches.
The section between Dairy Circle Junction and the Indian Christian Cemetery near Hosur Road was partially closed for underground tunneling work. According to officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the reconstruction of the full carriageway is currently in progress. Two-way traffic has already been restored near the Lakkasandra underground station, and the remaining stretch close to Dairy Circle Junction will reopen soon.
For residents and commuters who have faced long travel times and congestion since 2021, this reopening promises smoother rides and reduced travel stress. During construction, several one-way routes and diversions had caused daily inconvenience, especially during rush hours. Local shops and businesses also suffered due to limited customer access and blocked service lanes. With traffic resuming both ways, the area’s commercial activity is expected to bounce back strongly.
BMRCL officials mentioned that the Pink Line project faced several challenges, including a tunnel boring machine breakdown caused by debris. Despite these setbacks, the project has now entered its final stages. Once completed, the 21-kilometer Pink Line will connect Kalena Agrahara in the south to Nagawara in the north, significantly improving city-wide connectivity. The underground stretch from Dairy Circle to Nagawara is expected to be completed by December 2026, while the 7-kilometer elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Taverekere is likely to finish by May 2026.
However, some commuters have reported issues such as potholes, uneven surfaces, and incomplete footpaths along the reopened portions. BMRCL and BBMP are expected to address these concerns with final surface improvements once the entire stretch is operational.
The reopening of Bannerghatta Road marks a major milestone in Bengaluru’s metro expansion journey and a crucial step toward restoring smooth connectivity across the city’s south corridor.
