The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is conducting a feasibility study for a proposed 16-kilometre double-decker Metro corridor connecting Krishnarajapura (KR Pura) and Hoskote in eastern Bengaluru as a potential extension of the city’s Purple Line.
According to BMRCL officials, the elevated double-decker structure — combining metro tracks and potentially a flyover — is being examined to assess traffic demand, construction costs, technical viability and sustainability. The study is being prepared by Introsoft Solutions Pvt Ltd, the same firm working on other Purple Line extension plans towards Hoskote.
If approved, the corridor will link KR Pura, a major interchange station on the existing Namma Metro network, with Hoskote — an area seeing rapid development due to improving infrastructure and transport links. Proposed stations along the route include ITI Bhavan, TC Palya Gate, Battarahalli Junction, Medahalli Junction, Avalahalli, Budigere Cross, Kattamanalur Gate, Hoskote Toll Plaza, KEB Circle and Government Hospital, Hoskote.
Earlier plans had envisioned extending the Purple Line directly from Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Hoskote, but authorities re-aligned the project to originate from KR Pura to better integrate the new corridor with existing metro operations. The double-decker design is proposed as a way to optimise space and integrate metro infrastructure with elevated arterial traffic routes.
Officials say the areas along the proposed corridor — including Budigere Cross and the Hoskote toll plaza sections — have witnessed significant real estate growth, driven by improved connectivity stemming from the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, the Satellite Ring Road, and the proposed Bengaluru Business Corridor. Enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit both residential and commercial demand as the region evolves.
The feasibility study will be followed by a detailed project report (DPR), which will outline technical, environmental and financial aspects of the proposed double-decker corridor. The DPR is an important milestone for securing approvals and funding from both the Karnataka government and central authorities.
The potential corridor is part of broader efforts by BMRCL to expand the Namma Metro network and address growing mobility needs in Bengaluru. With rapid urbanisation and increased demand for efficient mass transit, new metro extensions are seen as key to reducing road congestion and supporting sustainable urban growth across the city’s suburbs.
