Karnataka’s information technology exports are expected to cross ₹5.5 lakh crore in the current financial year, according to statements made by state IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge in the legislative assembly. The growth reflects continued expansion in the technology sector, with Bengaluru remaining the primary contributor to the state’s IT economy.
Officials indicated that IT exports from the state have steadily increased over the past few years. While Bengaluru accounts for the majority of technology exports, other cities such as Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Hubballi are also gradually contributing to the sector’s growth.
The IT-BT department has also indicated efforts to expand the technology ecosystem across different regions of Karnataka.
Recent Growth in Karnataka’s IT Exports
The state has recorded consistent growth in IT-BT exports over the past few financial years.
| Financial Year | IT Exports |
|---|---|
| 2022–23 | ₹3.5 lakh crore |
| 2023–24 | ₹4 lakh crore |
| 2024–25 | ₹4.5 lakh crore |
| 2025–26 (expected) | ₹5.5 lakh crore |
Officials noted that the increase in exports reflects strong demand for software services, technology development, and digital infrastructure.
Regional Contribution to the Technology Sector
While Bengaluru remains the central hub for IT exports, the government has highlighted contributions from other cities.
Key contributions include:
-
Bengaluru: Majority share of IT exports
-
Mysuru: Approx. ₹3,000 crore contribution
-
Mangaluru and coastal region: Around ₹3,500 crore combined
-
Hubballi and Belagavi: Emerging technology centres
Authorities have also discussed initiatives aimed at expanding technology investment across different districts to reduce regional economic disparities.
Data Centre Policy and Technology Infrastructure
The state government is also reviewing its data centre policy to align it with recent developments in the digital infrastructure sector. Officials noted that Karnataka currently hosts several private data centres and aims to strengthen infrastructure supporting technology companies.
Industry discussions have also highlighted that data centres require significant power and water resources, making infrastructure planning an important factor in future expansion.
Real Estate and Urban Development Impact
The continued growth of the IT sector has historically played a major role in shaping Bengaluru’s real estate market. Expansion in the technology industry often influences both commercial and residential property demand.
Potential impacts include:
-
Increased demand for office space in technology corridors
-
Growth of residential housing near IT parks
-
Expansion of data centres and technology infrastructure
-
Development of secondary tech hubs in other cities
Infrastructure and policy initiatives aimed at diversifying the IT sector across the state may also influence urban development patterns in emerging cities.
