The Karnataka Cabinet has cleared a proposal to develop a large sports complex at the Jakkur Aerodrome in north Bengaluru, according to sources familiar with the decision. The approval was reportedly granted during a cabinet meeting held earlier, though the agenda and resolution related to the project were not formally disclosed in public records following the meeting.
The proposed development involves repurposing a significant portion of land at the Jakkur Aerodrome, which has historically been used for aviation-related activities, including pilot training. The site is home to the Government Flying Training School and has long been considered a key aviation asset within the city. The plan is still at an early stage, and detailed project reports are yet to be prepared.
Officials indicate that the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports has been assigned the responsibility of preparing the project framework. The department is expected to approach the Karnataka High Court to seek permission for the proposed change in land use, as previous legal directions had restricted the aerodrome’s land to aviation purposes only. Any further progress on the project will depend on regulatory approvals and judicial clearance.
The proposed sports complex is expected to include multiple facilities aimed at promoting organised sports and recreational activities. While specific details regarding infrastructure components, investment size and timelines have not been officially released, the project is positioned as part of the state government’s broader push to expand sports infrastructure in urban areas.
The manner in which the cabinet approval was handled has drawn attention, as cabinet decisions are typically made public through official briefings or documents. Government sources, however, maintain that all statutory procedures will be followed and that transparency requirements will be addressed as the project moves into the next stage.
The Jakkur Aerodrome holds historical and functional importance for Bengaluru’s aviation ecosystem, and any proposed changes to its usage are likely to be closely examined by multiple stakeholders. As of now, no construction activity has commenced, and the project remains subject to legal scrutiny and formal clearances.
Further updates are expected once the sports department submits detailed proposals and the matter is reviewed by the court and other regulatory authorities
