The foundation stone for India’s first mega green ammonia plant was laid on 17 January 2026 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, marking a major step in the country’s clean energy transition. The ceremony was attended by top state leaders, highlighting strong government support for large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.
The project, developed by AM Green, a subsidiary of the Greenko Group, covers approximately 495 acres and is one of the largest clean energy investments in India. The plant is being built by converting an existing ammonia facility and is designed to produce 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum of carbon-free green ammonia.
Green ammonia differs from conventional grey or blue ammonia by using renewable energy, including solar and wind, to generate hydrogen through electrolysis. This process eliminates carbon emissions during production, aligning with India’s commitments to global decarbonization and net-zero goals.
Located near Kakinada Port, the facility is expected to position India as a major exporter of green ammonia, targeting international markets in Europe and Asia. The company has secured long-term supply agreements with partners in Germany, Japan, and Singapore for future exports.
The plant will be powered by a 4,500 MW solar-wind hybrid energy system along with 950 MW of pumped storage to ensure a continuous supply of renewable energy. Additionally, a 2-gigawatt electrolyser manufacturing unit will be established locally, supporting broader industrial development in the region.
Production is planned to begin in phases, with initial operations starting in 2027 and full capacity expected by 2030. The project is set to generate thousands of jobs during both construction and operations, contributing to regional economic growth.
Experts note that the facility strengthens India’s clean energy supply chain and enhances its export potential for renewable fuels. It also demonstrates the country’s commitment to supporting global energy transition initiatives while promoting sustainable industrial development.
