Mangaluru’s ambitious Nethravati Riverfront Development Project is nearing a key milestone, with the first 450-metre stretch of the riverfront promenade now almost complete and preparing for its official inauguration. The riverfront, planned as a major urban beautification and tourism initiative, aims to transform the banks of the Nethravati River into a vibrant public space featuring walkways, landscaped zones, leisure attractions and community infrastructure.
The initial 450-metre segment includes a wide pedestrian promenade designed to accommodate visitors, morning walkers and cyclists. As part of the broader master plan, the riverfront will also integrate green pockets, recreational spaces and modern lighting systems to enhance safety and public experience. The coastal city, already known for its scenic waterfronts, expects this project to become a notable addition to its urban landscape.
Authorities have noted that the upcoming riverfront is part of a phased development strategy envisioned to boost tourism and support local economic activity. The larger project is expected to include cultural event zones, retail areas, viewing decks and river-facing public plazas, offering residents and visitors an engaging recreational destination. The promenade’s design draws from successful waterfront revitalisation models seen in other Indian and international cities, aiming to improve Mangaluru’s liveability and strengthen its appeal as a coastal tourism hub.
As the first section nears completion, urban planners anticipate increased footfall once the public is granted access. The project also aligns with the city’s larger vision of sustainable waterfront development, promoting walkability and offering community-centric open spaces. Further phases of the riverfront development will continue along the riverbank in the coming months, subject to approvals and construction schedules.
With the inaugural stretch set to open soon, Mangaluru’s Nethravati Riverfront is poised to become one of the city’s most significant public infrastructure additions, marking a key step in enhancing urban aesthetics and waterfront accessibility.
