The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning a major upgrade of the road between Bengaluru and Vijayawada. The NH‑44 will be widened from four lanes to a 10‑lane highway along the 90‑kilometre stretch from Devanahalli to Kodikonda. This will reduce travel time and improve regional connectivity.

The highway will have a six-lane main carriageway and additional service lanes. It will connect with the 342 km Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada expressway, creating a faster and smoother route. Travel time between Bengaluru and Vijayawada is expected to drop from 11–12 hours to 6–7 hours.

A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared and should be completed by February 2026. Most of the land is already acquired. However, approvals for three railway overbridges are still pending. Construction will likely begin near Kannamangala Gate, Devanahalli once approvals are complete.

Safety features are a key part of the project. The highway will include 1.5-metre central barriers, new street lighting, and improved traffic management to reduce accidents. A cloverleaf interchange at Kodikonda will connect NH‑44 with the expressway, ensuring smooth traffic flow.

The widened highway will also improve connections to other major routes. It will intersect the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) near Devanahalli and link with the partially operational Bengaluru–Chennai expressway. This will boost traffic movement and support regional economic growth.

Once completed, the upgraded NH‑44 will become a vital corridor for commuters, transporters, and businesses. It will improve road safety, cut travel time, and strengthen regional connectivity.
