Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Yellow Line is set to see improved frequency as the fifth trainset is scheduled to enter service by mid-October 2025. The development comes as part of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) efforts to enhance connectivity and reduce passenger wait times on this crucial corridor.
On Thursday, Bengal-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) dispatched all six coaches of the new trainset from its factory. The coaches are being transported by global freight forwarding company Total Movements and are expected to reach Bengaluru by early October, depending on weather and traffic conditions. Once assembled, the trainset will undergo static tests at Hebbagodi depot’s Inspection Bay Line (IBL), followed by two weeks of trial runs before deployment on the mainline.
The 19.15 km Yellow Line, connecting RV Road with Bommasandra via Silk Board Junction, was inaugurated on August 11 with three trainsets and a 25-minute frequency. The addition of a fourth trainset earlier this month reduced the headway to 19 minutes. With the arrival of the fifth trainset, the line will soon operate at a frequency of 15–16 minutes.
The Yellow Line has significantly expanded Bengaluru Metro’s overall network to 96.1 km and helped increase daily ridership to over one million. According to BMRCL officials, the average daily ridership on the Yellow Line alone now stands at 84,000.
TRSL is manufacturing the trains under a sub-contract with China’s CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd., which had secured a ₹1,578-crore contract to deliver 36 trainsets for Namma Metro. Each six-coach trainset consists of 12 bogies, weighing 7.5 tonnes each.
BMRCL officials also confirmed that the sixth trainset is expected to be dispatched in early November, while the seventh and eighth trainsets are currently undergoing outfitting and will be shipped by sea in the coming months.
The improved frequency is expected to further ease congestion, shorten travel time for commuters, and support Bengaluru’s growing public transport demand.
