The Karnataka Cabinet has approved a ₹307 crore revamp of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch between KR Puram and Silk Board Junction in Bengaluru, marking a significant step toward easing traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest corridors. The project focuses on improving road quality, enhancing commuter safety, and strengthening mobility infrastructure across the 17-kilometre stretch.
The approved plan includes widening key portions of the ORR and upgrading the existing surface to a standard bituminous concrete layer for better durability and smoother travel. Large parts of the route will undergo reconstruction to address uneven stretches and traffic bottlenecks that cause long delays during peak hours. Officials confirmed that the project will support improved traffic flow and enhance connectivity between major IT hubs, residential pockets, and commercial zones along the eastern and southeastern parts of the city.
A major feature of the revamp is the addition of brushed-concrete footpaths that will double as dedicated cycle lanes on both sides of the corridor. This aims to encourage safer pedestrian movement and promote cycling as an alternative mode of transport. The reintroduction of bus priority lanes has also been proposed to improve public transport efficiency and reduce vehicular congestion, especially on sections prone to heavy traffic.
The plan also includes new service roads alongside the main highway to convert the stretch into a multi-lane system, enabling smoother lane segregation and reducing merging conflicts. Additional commuter-centric facilities such as modern bus shelters, improved lighting, and better access points are expected to enhance the overall travel experience. A skywalk under the metro viaduct between Iblur and KR Puram has also been discussed and may be taken up under a public-private partnership model.
Authorities believe that the ₹307 crore investment will address critical mobility challenges and provide faster, more reliable travel for thousands of daily commuters. The ORR between KR Puram and Silk Board is a vital link for Bengaluru’s IT corridor, and the approved infrastructure improvements are anticipated to offer long-term benefits for traffic management, connectivity, and urban transport efficiency.
