Bengaluru is set to get its longest tunnel-like underpass near Yelahanka Airbase on NH‑44. The project aims to improve connectivity and fill a missing link in the busy airport highway corridor.
The underpass will be 320 metres long and have two lanes with paved shoulders. It will be built using the cut-and-cover method, where a trench is excavated, the structure constructed, and the surface restored. Alongside, an 800-metre surface road will be developed to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Currently, this stretch lacks a continuous service road, causing congestion along the 22.12-km Hebbal-Trumpet corridor, a key route to Kempegowda International Airport. The new underpass will ease traffic, reduce travel time, and enhance connectivity for commuters.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is coordinating with the Indian Air Force. Gates and compound walls in the path have already been relocated. Preliminary work covering 200 metres is complete, paving the way for main construction.
The project’s Request for Proposal (RFP) is open, with bid openings on 25 February 2026. Contract awards are expected by late March. The underpass is slated for completion in 18 months, with a significant portion ready ahead of the Aero India 2027 airshow.
Once finished, this underpass will strengthen infrastructure, improve traffic management, and support smoother vehicular movement near Yelahanka Airbase. It is a key development for Bengaluru’s northern corridor and marks a major step in modernizing NH‑44.
