Kamaraj Road, an important arterial stretch in Bengaluru’s Central Business District (CBD), has reopened to full vehicular traffic after nearly seven years of closure, bringing significant relief to commuters and businesses in the city core. The reopening restores a crucial east–west connection between Cubbon Road and MG Road, an area that has long experienced congestion due to traffic diversions.
The road was closed in 2019 to facilitate the construction of the underground MG Road metro station as part of the upcoming Pink Line of Namma Metro. During the prolonged construction period, traffic was diverted through surrounding roads such as Brigade Road, Residency Road, and Commercial Street, leading to longer travel times and increased congestion, especially during peak hours.
With the reopening, both carriageways of Kamaraj Road are now fully operational, allowing two-way traffic movement. The restored stretch spans over 200 metres and has been rebuilt with improved road surfacing and enhanced safety features to accommodate current traffic volumes. The completion of this stretch marks the end of one of the longest road closures in the CBD in recent years.
Traffic authorities expect the reopening to significantly reduce congestion across MG Road and nearby junctions by redistributing vehicle flow more evenly. Daily commuters travelling to offices, commercial hubs, and retail zones in central Bengaluru are likely to benefit from shorter travel distances and reduced commute times. The move is also expected to improve access for emergency vehicles and public transport operating in the area.
In addition to road restoration, the completion of underground metro infrastructure beneath Kamaraj Road is expected to enhance public transport connectivity once the Pink Line becomes operational. The underground station will integrate with the existing elevated metro network, offering seamless interchange options for passengers travelling across different parts of the city.
Urban planners view the reopening as a key step in improving mobility within the CBD, which remains one of Bengaluru’s busiest employment and commercial zones. While traffic conditions will continue to evolve as metro work progresses in other areas, the reopening of Kamaraj Road is expected to bring measurable improvement to traffic circulation and commuter convenience in central Bengaluru.
