The Union Ministry of Railways has given approval for a new super-fast passenger train linking Bengaluru and Mumbai, announced on 19 October 2025 by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. The approved service will run via the central Karnataka route through Tumakuru, Davanagere, Haveri, Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi.
The route alignment reflects a significant shift from existing options, which currently utilise the Guntakal–Solapur corridor. The new train is expected to serve both city-to-city commuters as well as passengers travelling from central Karnataka to Mumbai, thereby filling a long-standing gap in connectivity.
Officials say the dedicated service aligns with Indian Railways’ broader goal of faster connectivity between major metropolitan centres. While specific details such as train number, schedule or travel-time reduction have not yet been officially released, rail-sources suggest that a reduction in journey duration compared to current services is likely.
In his announcement, Minister Pralhad Joshi expressed that commuters had long awaited better rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai, stressing that the new super-fast service would bridge a three-decade-old connectivity void.
Railway insiders point out that once operational, the new route via central Karnataka could help decongest other long-haul links and spread benefits across multiple districts in the state. However, implementation timelines will depend on finalising rolling-stock availability, track readiness, and timetable compatibility.
The approval of this super-fast train adds fresh impetus to infrastructure connectivity in south-west India—dreamed of by many rail-users for years. With formal rollout on track, attention now shifts to the announcement of operational details and passenger services timetable.
