Anthropic, the AI firm behind the Claude chatbot, has announced plans to establish its first office in India in Bengaluru, targeted for early 2026. The move marks a strategic push to deepen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.
The company’s co-founder and CEO, Dario Amodei, is already visiting India to lay the groundwork for operations, including engaging with public and private stakeholders.
Anthropic says the new Bengaluru office will focus on building localized AI applications and recruiting talent across technical, research, and operations roles.
India is already Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude usage, which the company cites as a key reason for choosing Bengaluru. Bengaluru will become its second Asia Pacific location after Tokyo.
Analysts view this development as part of a broader trend: global AI firms expanding into India to tap local demand, low latency markets, and a rich developer base. The announcement comes as rivals also scale up in the country.
With this expansion, Anthropic aims to accelerate its AI roadmap in India, particularly in Indic language support, regional use-cases, and enterprise adoption. The Bengaluru office is expected to play a key role in these efforts.
As the company moves from announcement to execution, the Indian AI ecosystem will be watching closely—particularly how quickly Anthropic can onboard local talent, secure infrastructure, and compete with established players in the Indian market.
