BENGALURU: Rail travel between Bengaluru and Hyderabad is expected to become faster starting next month following key infrastructure upgrades undertaken by the South Western Railway (SWR). The development marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity between the two major southern Indian cities.
Doubled Rail Stretch to Improve Travel Time
The improvement comes after SWR commissioned a newly doubled 30-kilometre rail section between Makajipalli and Dharmavaram in southern Andhra Pradesh. This track doubling is expected to reduce bottlenecks on the busy inter-state rail corridor, enabling trains to run at higher speeds and potentially shorten overall journey duration for passengers.
Railway officials have indicated that the doubling work will allow trains to operate more efficiently along this section, which traditionally presented constraints due to single-line traffic and slower speeds. The project is part of broader efforts to modernize rail infrastructure and improve service quality on long-distance routes.
Connectivity and Travel Impact
The Bengaluru–Hyderabad corridor is a key link between Karnataka’s capital and Telangana’s capital, serving a mix of business travellers, tourists, students, and daily commuters. Faster rail journeys on this route may offer:
-
Reduced travel time: Improved line capacity and speed could shorten typical journey duration.
-
Enhanced scheduling: Rail operators may offer more reliable timetables with reduced delays.
-
Better service satisfaction: Efficiency upgrades generally improve overall passenger experience.
Passengers travelling on major services between Bengaluru and Hyderabad are expected to benefit from these enhancements when the upgraded section becomes operational next month.
Broader Rail Infrastructure Progress
The rail route’s enhancement aligns with a series of infrastructure improvements undertaken across the Indian Railway network. Rail authorities are focusing on track doubling, electrification, and speed upgrades to reduce congestion and improve journey times on key inter-city corridors.
Efforts to promote faster travel are also reflected in broader plans such as proposed high-speed rail links and corridor modernization under national rail development programs. This growth is also mirrored in the Hyderabad real estate market, where connectivity acts as a primary catalyst for property value appreciation.
