The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has announced plans to set up a modern three-storey co-working facility in the George Town area, aimed at empowering the local workforce and enhancing employment opportunities for low-income groups. The upcoming project will be located on Wall Tax Road, one of Chennai’s oldest commercial hubs.

According to official reports, the co-working space will feature around 150 workstations distributed across three floors. The ground floor will house a 770 sq. ft. lobby, while the first and second floors will each include a 75-seater workspace, along with dedicated waiting areas and restrooms. The facility will also offer coffee vending units and a canteen with a sheltered dining area on the top floor.

To support skill development, the CMDA will provide computers with internet access, digital magazines, and reading materials for competitive exams. Each floor will have three computer terminals, allowing users to access online learning platforms and resources. Additionally, a bike parking area with 20 slots will be developed for the convenience of daily commuters.

Local councillor Rajesh Jain highlighted that areas like Wall Tax Road and Elephant Gate have a high concentration of residents from low-income backgrounds who are entering computer-based jobs. He added that such initiatives would not only uplift individuals but also contribute to the overall economic development of the locality.

Expected to be completed by December 2025, the project aligns with CMDA’s broader goal of creating inclusive and accessible workspaces across Chennai. By establishing a shared workspace model in a densely populated area, the authority aims to bridge the gap between job seekers and digital infrastructure.

The co-working hub is expected to serve as a community-centric workspace, offering flexible access to professionals, freelancers, and small-scale entrepreneurs in George Town. It marks another step towards making Chennai a digitally inclusive and employment-ready city.
